William Slater (below) was the son (according to his marriage certificate) of one John Longden miner and so it seems likely he was the illegitimate son of a woman named Slater. His marriage in 1850 at North Wingfield was witnessed by Thomas and Elizabeth Slater (signing in that order). The only local match for Thomas on the 1851 census is the Thomas Slater b c1833 (son of Josiah) (below) whilst Elizabeth might likely be Thomas's wife rather than his mother (as the mother might have signed first). Note that William names a daughter Caroline perhaps after Thomas's sister of that name. He also names a son Aaron and in 1841 another Aaron is living next door to Josiah and might be his son.
