Clay Cross or Clay Lane is a township with 2,278 inhabitants; 690 at least employed at the extensive Clay Cross colliery and ironworks. The North Midland railway passes the midst of the works, and has a station here. A new church is erected, dedicated to St. Bartholomew; the Rev. John Oldham, M.A., incumbent.
